Question about Democrats and Republicans?

Today the Democrats are for diversity even to the point of forcing it through affirmative action. Republicans, while not against diversity, like things the way they are and are skeptical of affirmative action or anything that is pro-diversity. But, during the Civil War the Democrats where mostly for slavery while the Republicans, along good old Abe, were against it. What happened to reverse these two parties' views?
